A Sugar Smacks Trip Down Memory Lane

Have you ever been so lost in the music that it felt like time stood still? That's what happened to me on a magical August night at the "Happy Together Tour" at the Veterans Memorial Civic & Convention Center in downtown Lima. As the final band, The Turtles, took the stage, a wave of nostalgia washed over me.

I was a kid of the 60s, growing up with the infectious tunes of bands like The Archies. The moment The Turtles began their set with "Sugar Sugar," I was transported back to my childhood kitchen.

Picture this: I'm sitting at the table, scissors in hand, carefully cutting out a cardboard Archies record from the back of a Sugar Smacks cereal box. The excitement was palpable. This was my very own record, ready to be played on repeat whenever I wanted. No more waiting for my transistor radio to randomly play my favorite songs.

As I snipped the edges of the cardboard, I couldn't help but sing along to the tune playing in my head:

"Ah Sugar ……. Oh, Honey Honey …… You are my candy girl ….."

It was a surreal experience, a fleeting glimpse into a cherished memory. The concert was still happening around me, but for a moment, I was lost in a world of childhood wonder and joy.

This is why I love Greater Lima. It's a place where memories are made and cherished. Whether it's a concert that takes you back in time or a new culinary adventure, there's always something to discover and enjoy.
